In this article, we’re going to discuss about a set of tips that will improve your writing skills.

There are many ways of writing. It can be a business report or an essay.

When it comes to writing, no matter if you’re a student or a senior businessman, you should have a basic set of skills to be a good writer. And, as I mentioned earlier, even there are many ways of writing, there are common skills that you should have in any type of writing situation.

To be honest, I’m not a good writer until I followed below mentioned writing tips. So, don’t worry my friends, I’ll show you how I improved my writing skills step-by-step. Also, it’ll help you guys to improve your writing skills.

No more burdens anymore!

Do you think that to be a good writer, you’ll need to know heavy or big words? The answer is No! If you’re thinking like that, you’re completely wrong. There is no such thing.

Remember, you don’t have to be a vocabulary expert to improve your writing skills. So, carefully read the following writing tips.

Tip #1: Use simple sentences instead of heavy words

Most students think that they have to write in advance English to get higher grades. Even you’re writing a blog, your content should be simple. Simple means that the content should be easy to read and understand.

Since this is an educational article, let’s assume you’re writing a report for your bachelor’s assignment. Or, let’s assume that you’re writing a business report for your boss.

When writing a report, it should be very easy to grab the content. Otherwise, the reader will lose the interest or might be hard to understand what you’re trying to say.

If you’re a student, I guess that your aim is to get higher grades. So make sure that your lecturer will understand your content. Because, most of the students won’t deliver the appropriate content because they target on being advanced in their report.

Why don’t you read our article which is about Report Writing?

So, always try to write in a simple way, so your audience will easily understand the content.

Tip #2: Find and prepare your content before start writing

Don’t start until you gather a good set of content. Because, if you don’t have anything to write, you’ll definitely fail. Firstly, you should decide what the topics are, sub topics, and content that you’re going to write.

If you’re a student, Google scholar is the best place to find reliable content.

Also, make sure that you’re not relying on content which have been produced by sites such as Wikipedia, unreliable blogs, etc.

Tip #3: While being simple, be specific

The most important thing in writing is that while you making your content understandable, you should be more specific. Otherwise, it will not be helpful for anyone. The reader may lose interest on your content.

If you’re a student, being more specific is very important. Because, if it is not, you’ll probably get lower grades.

Still you don’t get what I’m saying here? Okay, let’s see the below example;

  1. I ate an ice cream.
  2. I ate a Belgium Choco Chip ice cream from the town store. It was only $0.99.

So, can you see? The more specific sentence is the 2nd one. It provides a detailed content for the reader. So, when you’re writing, you should be more specific instead of making everything simple.

Tip #4: Write short sentences as much as possible

When you’re writing, try to write short sentences. If there is a long sentence, try to separate it for at least 2 sentences.

Also, it will help you to avoid many mistakes in your content.

If you’re a blogger, you may probably know SEO (Search Engine Optimization). In SEO, its better if you can keep your sentences below 20 words. It will make the readability much easier.

Tip #5: Try to separate paragraphs as much as possible

The most common mistake that most writers do is that they write all their content in one whole paragraph. Don’t ever do that!

Try to separate paragraphs when possible.

For example;

If you’re a student, when you’re writing an answer for an essay question, make sure that you separate your content for 3 parts;

  1. Introduction,
  2. Body,
  3. And conclusion

When you’re writing the body part of your answer, try to separate it for 3 – 5 paragraphs instead of writing as a whole paragraph. It’ll make easier for reader to grab the content of your answer.

When you’re separating paragraphs, try to separate them topic wise. It is very important to provide a clear presentation of your answer.

So, it’ll be a good point for you to get higher grades in your exams.

Tip #6: Don’t repeat the same thing over and over again

When considering writing skills, repeating the same thing is not a skill. So don’t repeat the same thing over and over again.

So, make sure that you don’t repeat the same content again.

When we repeat the same thing again and again, it’ll obviously lose reader’s interest.

Tip #7: Read frequently

You can’t enhance your writing skills if you don’t read habitually.

Reading gives you the ability to write naturally. Even you don’t remember what you read previously, when the time comes, you’ll eventually get familiarized with the correct writing style.

So, make sure that you read at least 1 hour per day.

If you’re a lazy person, try to start from half an hour even.

Read things that you’re interested in. If you’re an automobile lover, start with reading automobile stuff.

Bonus Tip: Don’t give-up writing

No matter what, don’t give-up writing!

That’s the last thing that I want to tell you guys. If you give-up, you’ll never be a good writer.

Believe me, I was not a good writer until I figured it out. Writing is not rocket science. So don’t give up. Follow the above tips and you’ll eventually get used to writing in an excellent way.

Also, make sure that you write frequently. Write as much as possible. Without practice, you can’t improve your writing skills.

Like in sports, you have to practice everyday to be the expert.
